The second day in a row we have a potential 10-win team in the 40s of our Top-50 rankings. What are we doing??? The short answer is... I have no clue. The longer answer is, Boise State is one of those teams that I will be rooting for all season so that Cinderella can make an appearance in the College Football Playoffs. Although, the reality of the situation is because of the conference they play in and who is on their schedule, the Broncos will most likely have to go undefeated to be considered to be in the CFP this year. If they drop a game or two, they will most certainly be an afterthought. Boise fans know it, the players know it, the coaches know it, and you know it. This is a very talented team that will win 9 or more games this year, but they have a pretty difficult non-conference schedule, so I think the peak for them is a Mountain West Championship and a trip to a New Year’s Six bowl.
Conference talk and the CFP selection process is a WHOLE different article, for now let's just leave it here: the Broncos need to receive a call from the Big 12 or Pac-12 and then they will be taken seriously by the committee.
The big wigs in Boise know exactly this, so they scheduled a Pac-12 opponent (Washington) and a Big 12 opponent (UCF) this year. I would love to see them win those games and then dominate the Mountain West like they did last year. They have the talent, but the odds are not in their favor, especially with some serious ground to cover on their defense after losing a handful of talent.
How many games will the Broncos win in 2023?
9 or more
8 or less
The offense will be just fine. In fact, if the Bronco’s can get Taylen Green’s best this year, they will have one of the scariest offenses in the nation. We know their running game will be at the top of CFB with two 1,000+ yard rushers, George Holani and Ashton Jeanty, in the backfield. Add a successful passing attack to that, which they are more than capable of doing, they may just rewrite the record books.
The defense may be the achilles heel this year for Coach Avalos’ team. They will have to replace 6 starters from last year's group that ranked in the top 15 in the nation in Points/Game, Yards/Game, and Yards/Play. I trust this unit to be at the top of the Mountain West this year still, but can they hang with the big boys like Washington and UCF? We shall see.
Prediction: 9-3.
