Plain and simple here. The Big Ten is nasty, and Maryland has to go through the gauntlet of Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan again this year. Will they ever be able to get to the high level those three teams are at? They are certainly trying to get there and are doing a halfway decent job of it with Mike Locksley leading the way.
Maryland had a solid year in 2022, going 8-5 and crowned champions of the highly sought after, Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The return of lead man, Taulia Tagovailoa, at QB is huge for the Terps, and they will bring in some quality transfers in at WR, namely, Tyrese Chambers out of FIU and Kaden Pranther out of West Virginia. They will also return their lead horse from last year, Roman Hemby, who ran for just shy of 1,000 yards and found the endzone 10 times last year. This offense will be solid and honestly, could compete for a conference championship in any other conference than the Big Ten…..or the SEC.
Where Maryland and Coach Locksley will fall short this year, as they did last year and the year before, is the defense. In 2021 they let up an average of 52 points versus Penn State, OSU, and Michigan and in 2022 they let up 35.6 points and had a negative point differential of 50 points against the three big dawgs of the Big 10. Tarheeb Still will be their lead at cornerback, but other than that, the Terps are kind of just hoping for the best with all the newcomers and rookies.
How many games will Maryland win in 2023
7 or more
6 or less
They just can’t keep up and I think the fans would admit that too, don’t tell the players and coaches that though as they try and rewrite history this year. The Terps will more than likely enter conference play at 3-0 ( don’t sleep on UVA thoooo) and will go around .500 during conference play, putting them at 7-5 or 8-4 at the absolute best. Solid team, just a couple (giant) steps behind where they need to be in order to compete with the best.
