TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA- UVA (-1.5) VS. FLORIDA STATE
With their 80-76 victory over Florida State (13-10, 7-5 ACC) on Saturday night, Virginia (19-5, 10-3 ACC) now has more wins in a 26 day span than 74 D-1 college basketball programs do throughout the entire season. Tony Bennett has his team playing inspiring basketball entering the home stretch of the regular season and it has Charlottesville buzzing with enthusiasm.
The Cavaliers have sole possession of 2nd place in the ACC at 10-3, and their 8 game win streak earned them an appearance at #21 in this week's AP Top-25 poll.
Saturday night was another potential "trap game" according to the "experts" but in the words of my good friend Jack K, "it helps to have "the best coach in the land" when a trap game comes to surface.
Virginia shot 50% (26-52) from the field, 55.6% (10-18) from behind the arc, had 18 assists, two players score more than 20 points (Reece Beekman had 21 and Isaac McKneely had a career high 29), and overcame a Jamie Luckie disaster-class on the whistle.
UVA had over 23 fouls called on them, which is the most in over 8 seasons. Were they all bad calls? Absolutely not. Did some of the calls force me to crack open another adult juice? Absolutely.
Regardless of the sketchy calls, UVA showed yet again they are capable of making winning plays down the stretch in a tight game on the road. This team continues to grow, continues to impress, and continues to turn heads.
Player of the Game: Isaac McKneely. 8-12 from the field, 5-7 from deep, 29 points, and one beautiful smile. Keep shooting Isaac, from literally anywhere you want.
Next Up: 2/13 vs. Pittsburgh. UVA looks to extend their win streak to 9 games and their home win streak to 24. Go Hoos!
