The Wembanyama Sweepstakes Are Over

Updated: Jun 9, 2023

Call off the dogs, the fat lady is singing. The San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Lottery tonight, also known as the “Victor Wembanyama Sweepstakes”. 14 teams came into Tuesday night with a “chance” to grab the 19-year-old, but only one could leave with the Frenchman in their arms at the end of the night.

The San Antonio Spurs were one of the worst teams in the NBA during the 2022-2023 season, ending the year with a 22-60 record. Not a single fan, front office bigwig, or member of that team cares anymore. The tank job was worth it and now the Spurs will be in immediate contention during the 2023-2024 season.

Victor Wembanyama makes who we know as the “Unicorn” in the NBA, Kristaps Porzingis, look like an average joe you find at your local YMCA. He is considered to be one of the best NBA prospects to ever enter the draft, yes that includes LeBron James. He can play both sides of the court very well, can dominate at the rim, and has an 8-foot wingspan. Wembanyama also leads the top French pro league in points, blocks, and rebounds….at just 19 years old. He also happens to be 7’2”, which only adds to the hype.

Does he have a lot to live up to? Absolutely he does, and with all of this talk about him being the next big thing, or as I heard on ESPN tonight “the most anticipated and most skilled prospect in all of sports”, anything other than a hall of fame career ending in “GOAT” discussions will be chalked up as a bust.

Best of luck, kiddo.
